In his Interview with Christiane Amanpour on CNN in 2016, President Buhari said he was much more shocked with the level of corruption he met in 2015 from the previous administration.
Here’s a few excerpts:
PMB: Yes we are, and those that are following the development see it.
Nigerians now are totally aware that what we were saying during our campaign, that was no exaggeration. And a few instances where 2.1 billion dollars….
PMB: Billion, not million dollars, were vote for military hard and software for the operations against Boko Haram.
Those responsible sat down as if they were going to have luch or dinner and shared it and put it in their accounts.
Amanpour: Money they designated to fight Boko Haram, they put it in their pocket?
Amanpour: And what do you do with these people who did that? Did their heads roll in terms of losing their job or get fired?
Well, most of them are now behind the bars.
We are getting the documents corrected in a way so that we can secure successful prosecution.
When Amanpour spoke about Ghost workers, and mentioned 23,000 ghost workers, PMB replied by saying “so far”.
Amanpour: Are there many more?
PMB: I suspect yes.
Amanpour: So are you getting rid of them systematically?
PMB: We have to. They never existed, so the concept of getting rid of them does not arise.
All we’re doing are those who have been signing those vouchers and pocketing the money will have to return it.
It’s a question of how long have they been doing it and for how many?
