The Supreme Court on Friday delivered judgment on the case brought before it by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) of the previous administration under the leadership of Abass Aleshinloye against the judgement of the Appeal Court which favoured Governor Seyi Makinde-led government.
The apex court, in its judgement, noted that the the tenures of the sacked Council chairmen and Councillors have expired but all outstanding salaries and allowances must be paid with immediate effect. The Court fined Oyo State Government with a sum of N20 million for perpetuating illegality.
The Chairmen operating under the auspices of the ALGON elected in 2018 were sacked on May 29, 2019 by Governor Makinde. After today’s Supreme Court judgement in favor of ALGON, the question is will the illegal caretaker Chairmen illegally installed by Governor Seyi Makinde refund Oyo State money they enjoyed for two years?
Will Judgment like this not become one of the reasons why the Governors will continue to break the law deliberately as long as it is only financial penalty to be paid by the State?
